AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF UNIVERSITY PARK, TEXAS, AMENDING
THE CODE OF ORDINANCES OF THE CITY OF UNIVERSITY PARK, AS
HERETOFORE AMENDED, BY AMENDING CHAPTER 3, ARTICLE 3.100, TO AMEND
SECTION 903.2.12.7 OF THE INTERNATIONAL BUILDING CODE, 2006 EDITION,
AND SECTION R325.1 OF THE INTERNATIONAL RE5IDENTIAL CODE FOR ONE-
AND TWO-FAMILY DWELLINGS, 2006 EDITION, AND BY AMENDING SECTION
903.212.7 OF THE INTERNATIONAL FIRE CODE, 2006 EDITION, TO PROVIDE FOR
SPRINKLERING OF EXISTING STRUCTURES; PROVIDING FOR THE REPEAL OF
ALL ORDINANCES IN CONFLICT; PROVIDING A SEVERABILITY CLAUSE;
PROVIDING FOR A PENALTY OF FINE NOT TO EXCEED THE SUM OF TWO
THOUSAND DOLLARS ($2,000.00) FOR EACH OFFENSE; AND PROVIDING AN
EFFECTIVE DATE.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF UNIVERSITY
PARK, TEXAS:
SECTION 1. That Article 3.100 "International Building Code Adopted" of the Code of
Ordinances of the City of University Park, Texas, is hereby amended in part by amending Section
903.2.12.7 of the Building Code and Section R325. l of the Residential Code as follows:
"ARTICLE 3.100 INTERNATIONAL CODES ADOPTED
Sec. 3.103 Amendments to the Building Code
The sections of the 2006 International Building Code that are changed, added, or deleted are as
follows:
(38) Amend Section 903.2.12.7 to read as follows:
"903.2.12.7 Existing Buildings. The owner of any building shall be required to install an
automatic sprinkler system at such time as the owner(s) constructs an addition or enlargement to
the building if the total square footage of such an addition, when combined with the total square
footage of all previous additions and enlargements to the building completed after April 3, 2007:
(i) causes the building to exceed 4,000 square feet (371.6 m2) of total floor area, and
(ii) the total square footage of all such additions and enlargements exceeds the original floor area
of the building by more than thirty percent (30%), regardless of fire area, area separation walls,
or fire walls.
Exception: Open parking garages in compliance with Section 406.3 of the International Building
Code."
"Sec. 3.105 Amendments to the One- and Two-Family Dwelling Code
(20A) Amend Section R325 in part to read as follows:
R325.1 Existing Buildings. The owner of any one- and two-family dwelling or townhouse shall
be required to install an automatic sprinkler system to protect the existing building and new
additions at such time as the owner(s) constructs an addition or enlargement to the building if the
total square footage of such an addition, when combined with the total square footage of all
previous additions and enlargements to the building after August l, 2008:
(i) causes the building to exceed 4,000 square feet (371.6 m2) of total floor area; and
(ii) the total square footage of all such additians and enlargements exceeds the original floor area
of the building by more than thirty percent (30%), regardless of fire area, area separation walls,
or fire walls."
SECTION 2. That Article 5.100 "International Fire Code", Section 5.103 (4~), of the Code
of Ordinances of the City of University Park, Texas, is hereby amended in part by amending Section
903.2.12.7 to read as follows:
"Article 5.100 International Fire Code
Sec. 5.103 Amendments to the 2006 International Fire Code
(47) ...
903.2.12.7 Existing Buildings. The owner of any building shall be required to install an
automatic sprinkler system at such time as the owner(s) constructs an addition or enlargement to
the building if the total square footage of such an addition, when combined with the total square
footage of all previous additions and enlargements to the building completed after April 3, 2007:
(i) causes the building to exceed 4,000 square feet (371.6 m2) of total floor area, and

(ii) the total square footage of all such additions and enlargements exceeds the original floor area
of the building by more than thirty percent (30%), regardless of fire area, area separation walls,
or fire walls.
Exception: Open parking garages in compliance with Section 406.3 of the International Building
Code."
SECTION 3. All ordinances of the City of University Park in conflict with the provisions
of this ordinance are hereby repealed.
SECTION 4. Should any sentence, paragraph, subdivision, clause, phrase or section of
this ordinance or the Code of Ordinances, as amended hereby, be adjudged or held to be
unconstitutional, illegal or invalid, the same shall not affect the validity of this ordinance as a whole
or any part or provision thereof, other than the part so declared to be invalid, illegal or
unconstitutional and shall not affect the validity of the Code of Ordinances as a whole.
SECTION 5. Any person, firm or corporation violating any of the provisions of this
ordinance or the Code of Ordinances as amended hereby shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor
and, upon conviction in the municipal court of the City of University Park, shall be fined in an
amount not to exceed the sum of two thousand dollars ($2,000.00) for each offense.
SECTION 6. That this ordinance shall take effect on August 1, 2008, after the publication
of the caption, as the law and Charter in such cases provide.
DULY PASSED by the City Council of the City of University Park, Texas, on the 30~' day
of September 2008.
